Prepare your loved one's device

Who it's for: the family administrator who gets the loved one's device ready. Ideally do this at your loved one's home, so that you can practise a call together at the end.

What you need

Steps

  1. Install the Vieressa app

The Vieressa app is not yet in the Google Play store or the App Store. You receive the app and its installation instructions with your invitation: for Android devices with an installation link, for iPhone and iPad with a TestFlight invitation. If you have not received them, write to tuki@vieressa.fi.

  2. Choose I have an activation code

Open the app on your loved one's device. On the login page, press I have an activation code.

  3. Enter the code

Type the eight-character code into the boxes and press Sign in with code. If you see the text Invalid or expired activation code, get a new code on the Family page by pressing Device code and try again.

  4. Allow the camera, microphone and notifications

When the device asks for permissions, allow the camera, microphone and notifications. Without them calls will not work or will not ring. The app also asks for location; calls work without it, and how location is used is explained in the Privacy Policy. If the device asks whether the app may run in the background without battery restrictions, allow it.

  5. Allow full screen notifications

If the device shows the text Calls cannot open the locked screen, press Open settings and switch Vieressa on. On Samsung the setting is under Settings → Apps → ⋮ → Special access → Full screen notifications. After this, an incoming call also appears on the locked screen. This setting applies to Android devices only: on iPad and iPhone the call rings without any extra settings.

  6. Check the volume

Adjust the sound with the device's side buttons. In the bottom left corner of the Vieressa screen there is also a yellow speaker button for adjusting the call volume. If the button is red, the sound is muted: press it and the sound comes back.

  7. Find a good place for the device

Put the device on a stand in a place where your loved one spends time and where faces are well lit. Keep the charger connected and make sure the network connection works in that spot.

If the device is not on a stand, keep it charged and in a place where it can be heard. It can be charged every night, for example.

How you know it worked: your loved one's device shows the Vieressa start screen with the date and clock or a family photo. When you call your loved one from your own app (Home → Call), their device rings and the screen shows your name and the green Answer button.
